Websites

The list below was compiled by yagamirai10.
Backgrounds from all these sources are free for noncommercial use, and though in some cases credit is not necessary it’s a good idea to do so.

If images are too small compared to DDLC’s default resolution (1280 x 720) then you might want to upscale them with waifu2x

– a pretty different art style

Vanishing Point (small images)

a decent amount of very nice backgrounds.

– the artist also seems to take commissions for backgrounds.

Yukito

– a pixiv user with a couple nice royalty free backgrounds.

– free for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification.

– additional variations (such as day/night variants) are available for 100 yen (about $1) per background on yukito’s BOOTH.

aquamary images

– has a few very nice fantasy-themed backgrounds.

– free for noncommercial use. commercial use requires direct permission and can’t be for anything exceeding 550 yen in price.

– redistributing the raw assets is forbidden. (using them in a mod that’s going to be distributed is fine, uploading the files on their own is not.)

Kujiji Empire (small images)

some nice painted backgrounds of multiple settings. (modern, fantasy, etc)

– free for noncommercial use.

kopacurve (small images)

primarily not a background site, but they do have some VFX backgrounds if you search through their archive a bit.

– the big thing here is that they have a TON of GUI elements like window images, etc. made for tyrannobuilder but would also work in ren’py.

– free for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification.

– must give credit with a link to their site: https://kopacurve.blog.fc2.com/ and resources cannot be redistributed as resources (like with aquamary, the images can be used in projects that will be distributed but cannot be reuploaded on their own.)

– they also sell some stuff on BOOTH, not more than a couple hundred yen (more GUI stuff.)

Creative Freaks

– wow a site in English!

– they have a few backgrounds of very nice quality.

– free for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification. Credit is not required. Images can’t be directly redistributed.

– they also work by commission and can be contacted in english, so they’re a potential option to commission original backgrounds if needed.

K’s Factory (small images)

a fairly large range of free backgrounds.

– they’re from 2002, so the style is a bit dated, but could work with retouching.

– free for commercial and noncommercial use. The only stipulation is to credit “K’s Factory” in your credits somewhere. Modification fully permitted.

Sasabuneya

– a very wide variety of painted backgrounds. many nature/scenery ones.

– free for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification. Credit must be given to “Sasabuneya” in your credits somewhere. images can’t be directly redistributed.

– hi-res!

蓮慈

– a few traditional japanese-style backgrounds, interior and exterior. lots of variations for all of them! (the rest of the artist’s work is regular illustration, so i linked to the only applicable tag directly.)

– free for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification. images can’t be redistributed directly. credit isn’t necessary, but it would make them very happy, so please credit 蓮慈 in your credits somewhere.

– they also take commissions for backgrounds by pixiv DM.

Tsunakan

– cute painterly exterior backgrounds.

– not really close to the DDLC style, but they’re very pretty anyway.

– free for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification. Images can’t be redistributed. Credit is not specified, so err on the side of caution and do.

For Sale

Minikle

– tons of backgrounds of all sorts of different locations and settings.

– for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification.

– tons of content in each pack. there’s multiple artists in the circle, though, so the quality can very pretty drastically.

– their stuff goes on sale very frequently.

QQQnoQnoQ

– a decent amount of backgrounds, some of which could be useful for DDLC. they also have fantasy backgrounds.

– for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification.

– very cheap.

PeasSoft

– only has one background pack but it is a VERY good one. tons of school backgrounds, as well as streets and stuff that would work for a small town. 181 total images including time variations and stuff.

– very high quality and a pretty good match for DDLC.

– for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification.

– a bit pricey but worth it.

Murakumo

– a fair amount of free backgrounds, as well as 3D objects that can be used in CGs.

– high quality and with a good variety of options.

– for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification.

– similar price point to minikle with a bit more consistent quality.

cantera-ya

– a few packs of very pretty 3D backgrounds in a very similar style to DDLC.

– for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification.

– could look almost identical to DDLC backgrounds with some painting over, but the camera angles are really strange. might be better for CGs.

– pretty cheap, but you don’t get very much stuff.

KMaru Studio

– they have a couple of packs of HQ backgrounds for sale through their BOOTH.

– the prices are a bit steep for the amount of content you get compared to some others, but the backgrounds are unique and quite nice looking.

– for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification. The artist is willing to make modifications by request but may charge if the modifications are complex.

– they also do original backgrounds by commission, though the prices are quite high.

Shounensha

– they’re selling a few HQ backgrounds for very modest prices on their BOOTH.

– they also have a couple things available for free download.

kuusousekawi

– a few very nice backgrounds, including interiors and exteriors.

– for commercial and noncommercial use and also allows modification. Credit to “kuusousekawi” is requested but not mandatory.

– backgrounds may not be redistributed as resources, even if they’re edited. (distributing in your mod is fine, but you can’t just upload the backgrounds themselves.)

If any of the ones that are in Japanese, just ask me and i’ll give you the information on how to credit, sometimes they have fairly specific rules. So let me know if you find something you like so i can translate the rules about credit for you, but all of those sites do allow all their music to be used royalty free.
